Sherry Anderson scored one in the ninth end to edge Nova Scotia’s Mary Mattatall 7-6 and capture the gold medal at the Canadian senior women’s curling championship at Stratford, Ont., on Thursday as she completed a repeat of her 2017 championship.
Anderson, along with her team from Saskatoon’s Nutana Curling Club consisting of third Patty Hersikorn, second Brenda Goertzen and lead Anita Silvernagle, started the game safely with two blank ends. In the third, Mattatall broke the game open by scoring four, but Anderson fought back to get two in the fourth before stealing one in the next three ends to take a 6-4 lead after seven. Mattatall then took two in the 8th to set up Anderson who got one with last rock in the extra end for the victory.
Anderson, who also won the provincial Scotties this year with a different rink, will now represent Canada at the 2019 World Seniors Championship. The World Curling Federation has not designated when and where that event will take place.
