The Swift Current Broncos are moving on in the WHL playoffs while the Regina Pats start a 40-plus day wait.
On Monday night in front of a sold-out crowd, the Broncos hung on to beat the Pats 3-2 in Game 7 of a series that saw Swift Current win all the odd-numbered games with Regina winning all the even-numbered ones.
While the first six games had been basically controlled by the winning team, Game 7 was a battle with neither team giving up lots.
After Cam Hebig gave Regina a 1-0 lead, Swift Current scored the next three on goals by Tyler Steenburgen, Max Patterson and Glenn Gawdin.
Robbie Holmes cut the deficit to one with just over four minutes to play in the second period, but that was the last goal of the series as Regina could not get the equalizer.
The Broncos will now either play the Moose Jaw Warriors or Prince Albert Raiders in Round 2. Those teams will meet in Moose Jaw Tuesday in Game 7 of that matchup.
The Pats won’t play again until May 18 when they play the Ontario Hockey League champs in Game 1 of the Mastercard Memorial Cup.
