Last week I came down with this bug that has been going around all winter. I can’t recall a winter where so many people were hit so hard. My wife came down with it about a week and a half ago and I had my fingers crossed hoping I’d come through unscathed. No such luck.
The last couple of afternoons I’ve forced myself to do something I very rarely do…take a nap. The odd time that I do doze off I’m on the couch watching TV, which never lasts very long with two animals jumping up and down and barking and meowing. The last couple of days I’ve actually headed into the bedroom where I could get some peace and quiet.
I’ve worked with other morning personalities in radio over the years that had to have a nap in the afternoon. It was just a part of their daily routine. People always seem a little shocked when I tell them that I don’t have a nap on a daily basis.
My wife can always tell when I’ve had a nap. If we talk on the phone in the afternoon she’ll ask, “did you have a nap today?” When I ask how she knows, she says “because you sound a little grouchy.” Fair enough. I’m not one of those that feels refreshed after having a quick laydown. For me it’s the opposite. I’m usually a bit groggy and grouchy for a while. I always feel better before I lie down!
This crazy shift I work can wreak havoc on a consistent sleep pattern. Most of the time it’s to bed at 7:30 and up by 2:30 or 3 at the latest. There are some nights where sleep won’t come at all. Then there are afternoons where it feels like I hadn’t slept at all the night before, even though I slept like a log.
I remember when I was younger I’d go to bed at 9 and get up at 7 the next morning to get ready for school. Now it’s in bed by 7:30 and up by 2:30 to get ready for work.
I think I’m moving backwards as life goes on.
