There’s a special day for everything – is there one for those of us that have to walk our bicycle to work to get the tires inflated!
A long winter of my roadster in the dining area of my apartment, I feel like a real biker with his or her ride in the middle of the living room. So now there is a big gap upstairs, I’m thankful for this. Its time to get that spring, summer feeling back. Cleaning up the balcony, preparing for outdoor activities and that includes riding my bike.
Last season I didn’t get out as much as I had anticipated. Like a car, you need to have a tune-up after a winter of sitting. Personally, I could use a tune up too. The extended dance mix known as WINTER seems to have sucked the energy out of us all. As of this weekend, the mood is significantly up beat! Smiles, laughter, a new energy abounds.
There’s no time like the present. The tire pump that I had, you know the old bicycle pump – just didn’t cut it. Bring on the air compressor. Let me just state – paying for air at a gas station stinks. And there’s no way we should be held hostage for air. I think Co-op Gas Bars maybe the only free air, there’s a little shop on Hill Avenue in Regina, they fix small engines, they have free air.
Dutch Cycle is my place of choice to have the bike tuned up. I bought saddle bags there last riding season and the people that helped me were great. It doesn’t take long to get things sorted as far alignment, lube of chain and air pressure. Boom you are back on the road. Bicycles help the environment, they give you a bit of a work out, fun for the entire family and with a little co-operation between motorists and bike riders we can all share the road.
Regina’s trail system could use a bit more work but it is pretty effective. As on the streets – there are always people that are inconsiderate. Use the street when you can, be aware of pedestrians on trails, use your bell or horn, wear a helmet for your safety and don’t forget the reflective gear. Know your hand signals and get ready to pedal through our spring, summer and fall.
I’m happy to know by the end of my day it will be Ride a Bike Home from Work Day.
