The government of Saskatchewan and Official Opposition are continuing on an important conversation about domestic violence.
Members, a good part of whom male, gathered together wearing high heeled shoes to raise awareness about it.
NDP MLA Nicole Sarauer said this is an issue that needs to be addressed.
“Saskatchewan has the very dubious distinction of having the highest rates of intimate partner violence amongst all provinces in Canada,” she said. “We need to do everything we can to highlight that as an epidemic in this province.”
Furthermore, Sarauer said members need to continue to consistently engage in a productive conversation so a broader audience can be thoroughly informed about this issue.
“Domestic violence doesn’t stay behind closed doors,” she said. “The more we talk about it, the more we’re open to talking about, the more help that folks feel like that they’re comfortable seeking.”
From the government’s side, Justice Minister Don Morgan said in March the government is working to make sure they are aiding domestic violence victims now and into the future.
“What we can and should do is try and do things as well as or equally as importantly on a preventative basis in the way of education and offering people supports for alcohol, for addictions and other things that would be contributing factors,” he said.
