After a string of years where crime has gone down, Regina’s crime rate saw an increase in 2017, which is unfortunate news to Regina’s police Chief.
Evan Bray pointed out that theft and gang-related crimes are notable areas where crime appears to be on the rise.
Bray says Regina Police would like to work with the suspects they catch so they don’t re-offend.
“Let’s try and dig into the people that are stealing the cars; who are these offenders, what are they struggling with in terms of addictions and what can we do if we are able to make an arrest, which we do in most cases, what can we do and what can other agencies do to try and prevent this person from re-offending.”
Bray says the results are disappointing seeing as crime was on the downward trend a year earlier.
According to Bray, many auto thefts take place before the suspect uses the stolen vehicle to commit more crimes.
