Shellbrook RCMP have reported human remains were found in a burnout car on First Nations land earlier in the week.
A member of the force was dispatched to the Ahtahkakoop First Nation around 10:15 Thursday morning to reports of a burning vehicle. Upon arrival, the burning vehicle was found, along with inflamed bushes. The burning vehicle wasn’t searched before the member departed the scene.
Around 5pm the same day, police received calls about a missing person last seen the night before. Just 30 minutes later, a call came in about a burnt out vehicle on the First Nation potentially containing human remains.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the vehicle, the same one from the morning, and confirmed the presence of human remains.
An autopsy is set to take place early next week and an investigation is in progress.
