I must commend the city crews on the road work that is getting done around the city. Every day there are a few new streets that are shut down for various kinds of work, from new sidewalks, to paving, to water leak repairs. There are some big jobs that will hamper traffic for longer, but for the most part, if the city says a street will be closed for one day only, usually that’s the case.
The highways around the city are another story. You can’t head out of town in any direction without running in to construction. You can drive faster on the Lewvan than you can on most of the highways heading out of the city. “Just think how nice it’ll be when it’s all done” is the battle cry heard over and over again. When it comes to road construction though, is it ever really done? When one job ends, another begins.
Some days I’d rather deal with road construction that some of the drivers I see on the road in the morning.
Coming into work this morning there was a small car that passed me while I was heading up Albert St. It moved into the lane I was driving in before slowing down to about 30. Then he was off like a bat out of hell until he hit a red light. I was still behind him when the light turned green, at which time he proceeded along at 30 again for half a block before zooming away on me again. What in the world was going through this guys mind? I’m still amazed at the number of idiots that travel the streets at 3 A.M.
The difference between road construction and bad drivers is, at least road construction will eventually come to an end. Bad drivers will be around forever!
