Firefighters were kept busy over the May long weekend as forest fires continue to be problematic in the northern part of the province.
13 cottages in Meadow Lake provincial park were destroyed by what is called the “Tuff Fire”. That fire is still not contained and is about 6,500 hectares in size.
Meanwhile, the Rabbit Creek wildfire on the southern edge of Prince Albert National Park continues to grow as well as it now stands at 24,000 hectares in size.
Parks Canada has been doing what it can to try and contain the blaze, but so far those efforts have been unsuccessful. They have placed the Sandy Lake and Narrows camgrounds on 24-hour evacuation alerts.
All backcountry trails and campgrounds at the park are now closed, and a fire ban is in effect for the national park. As for Waskesiu, all services remain open, but smoke is a factor.
