Police across the province were once again busy handing out speeding tickets in the month of April.
Numbers released Tuesday show that there were over 4800 speeders.
SGI’s Tyler McMurchy said it’s status quo compared to other numbers.
“It is still on the high side,” said McMurchy. “I think last year we never did a spotlight on speeding during the month of April, although the results were very similar. There were over 5000 tickets issued April of last year.”
April was the focus of police agencies across the province, considering as of May 1 base speeding fines increased by $30 among other changes. McMurchy provides an example.
“If you’re going 20 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on a regular stretch of highway or a street in Saskatchewan, it’s now going to cost you $190.”
Additionally, SGI continuing to remind motorists that distracted driving is an issue, with over 500 tickets being handed out. Out of those over 500 tickets, 426 were cellphone related.
