The Regina Public School Board has voted in favour of changing Davin Elementary school’s name.
The new name for the school will be The Crescents School, named after the neighbourhood it is in.
Chairperson of the Regina Public School Board Katherine Gagne says work to change the name will begin right away.
“I would expect that over the summer, work will begin on putting together a plaque to mark this decision, and to bring some educational pieces that can be rolled out in the fall.”
The School board voted overwhelmingly in favour of the name change, with four trustees for, one against, and one abstaining.
Gagne says it was an important decision for the board to make.
“I think it really speaks and really validates our commitment, I think it shows that we’re serious about doing what’s ever necessary to bring about that spirit of reconciliation and put action to words.”
The school was originally named after Nicholas Flood Davin, who wrote a report in 1879 which led to residential schools for First Nations youth being created.
