After Premier Scott Moe’s “50/50 formula” for equalization pitch, the provincial NDP spoke out, saying the government should be more financially responsible.
Federal equalization is given to provinces considered ‘have-nots,’ with Quebec being a prime example receiving just over $10 Billion in payments.
NDP leader Ryan Meili said the government should be careful with what they wish for.
“This is really an insurance program for those economies that are struggling more, and while we’ve been fortunate the last few years to not require that support, in the past we certainly have needed it.”
Meili said this seems like a distraction for the government’s lack of financial responsibility.
“One example of that I thought was in the discussion of another province’s child care programs compared to ours, and blaming that on equalization,” Meili said. “We had 10 years of being a ‘have’ province, if we really wanted to invest in child care, we would have done so.”
Premier Scott Moe presented a “50/50 formula” for equalization, where Quebec would receive more than eight billion dollars, and Saskatchewan would receive about $300 Million.
