The President of the SGEU is calling on the province to drastically improve the conditions and regulations of Saskatchewan’s four correctional centres.
Bob Bymoen said thanks to overcrowding, assaults, the cancellation of family visits and even a lack of medical care, penitentiaries are a “powder keg” waiting to go off.
Bymoen said the centres staff are just as unhappy as inmates in some cases.
“The provincial government needs to look at their hiring process, because right now they continue to hire and people continue to quit,” Bymoen said.
“They have got to find out why they can’t keeop employees inside these correctional centres,” he added.
Bymoen says correctional centre employees are not paid as well as police or fire, and struggle to get anytime off work.
