Regina police said they will ask for an independent oversight of an investigation after it was learned a police pursuit had taken place which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
On June 30, a 26 year old Grenfell man was killed instantly when the motorcycle he was riding struck a truck at Park Street and 9th Avenue in the city’s east end,
Police said the incident started when an officer travelling westbound on Victoria Avenue noticed a motorcyclist with a passenger heading the other way.
The driver was not wearing a helmet which resulted in the officer attempting to pull the driver over. Police say the man stopped briefly to let the passenger off before speeding away. That resulted in the officer turning on his lights and following the motorcycle with the crash happening moments later.
In the hours after the accident, police had said while members were in the area at the time of the crash, they did not think a pursuit had happened.
With that being the case, police are asking the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer to look after the investigation.
