This past week, residents didn’t see a whole lot of tornado activity here in Saskatchewan.
But do expect that to change.
So far to date, 15 tornadoes have touched down in the province.
“The average number of tornadoes for Saskatchewan every year is 18,” said Environment Canada meteorologist, Terri Lang. “So far, we’re getting up towards that average.”
Lang said there’s a been lack of tornadoes in the past number of years, which is why conservation regarding them has picked up steam and strength in recent times.
“When we do have these clumps or outbreaks, it really gets these people’s interest up,” she said. “Luckily, they haven’t been hitting a lot of stuff or doing a lot of damage and that’s the best we can hope for.”
Lang said whether believe it or not, it’s very true that a good crop year actually contributes to tornado formation, because of the amount of moisture it creates in the atmosphere.
