That time of year to consider your plans for August 11th. You have been warned, it is the 10th year of the Findlater Ranch Rodeo.
An idea that came about when local ranchers and farm families came together to resurrect a piece of pasture that had formerly been the Findlater Sports Grounds.
The Findlater Sports Day was part of a circuit that ran from June to July encompassing the towns of Dilke, Chamberlain, Holdfast, Bethune and Findlater. Do any of these tournaments remain in place? Bethune still holds down their July 1st date. Many towns have these well maintained ball parks and probably put them to use a few times a year. Findlater Sports day was quite the gathering with families coming together for one day to enjoy cold plates, hamburgers and candy, watching or playing ball. Guys in the sound trucks calling the game, while fans ate sunflower seeds. And somewhere, somebody was probably cracking a bottle of beer after playing! If you weren’t in the wooden bleachers, you were sitting on a blanket behind the fence.
Well, the idea of holding a ranch rodeo on the grounds may have started off as a wild idea and apparently came together very quickly, but after ten years it has maintained and grown in popularity. Where else can you go for $5 and enjoy a full day of “cowboyin’ up”. Family entertainment on and off the horse! The local 4-H groups help with the concession and the 50/50. Local families take their turn working in the beer garden, where kids can play, while a few adult beverages are consumed. Whether you come from town or up the road, there’s room for tents and campers (no services available) so you don’t have to drive home. Even the local bar has a limo service that might just assist you getting home!
The committee not only puts together the rodeo events, such as wild cow milking, trailer loading, cow doctoring, but they also arrange for live entertainment in the beer garden. Dancing the night away under a Saskatchewan moonlit night, can’t go wrong, can you? The fresh air is good for the soul, there’s mutton bustin’ for brave kiddies and bouncy castles and face painting for everyone else! And by the end of it all, a lot of memories and a good night’s sleep!
In my recollection of attending the Findlater Ranch Rodeo, the weather has always been amazing. The crowds have grown and remain strong, but there is always room for more. So, take this as your personal invitation from me, a member of the Findlater community to come and enjoy the day. Saturday, August 11th is the date. Bring a lawn chair, drive the RV out or pack a tent. Be ready to see real cowboys and cowgirls rope and ride striving for top marks in timed events to win the Edwards Bronze.
It’ll get Western! You should be there to experience it!
Saturday, August 11th. Located on Number 11 Highway – just 40 minutes NW of Regina.
