Whether it be camping, hunting, fishing or taking in one of the many different entertainment options or events that are held in Saskatchewan each year, the tourism sector is thriving.
Stats Canada numbers show visits to and within the province by Canadians increased by 9.4 percent from 2016 which is well ahead of the national rate of 2.1 percent.
It is a number that Tourism Saskatchewan officials do find surprising because of the size of the growth, but they aren’t apologizing.
Jonathan Potts is the executive director of marketing and communications for Tourism Saskatchewan. He says there are many things which can take credit for the increased numbers, but there is one thing in particular that he feels is driving the growth.
“It’s a reflection of the hard work being done in our industry.” Potts said. “The industry is investing and responding to trends. People are getting on top of their marketing efforts whether it be in rural or urban Saskatchewan and the experiences being had.
The numbers from Stats Canada show people spent 1.88 billion dollars in Saskatchewan’s tourism sector in 2017.
