A member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is looking to take a big bite out of Lyme Disease.
Jovon Johnson is hosting a barbeque out in Wascana Park Sunday to raise awareness for the disease, which first came to his attention when he was a member of the Ottawa Redblacks.
“It’s just something I grew fond of after having a conversation with a lady when I was playing in Ottawa,” he said. “Found out that she had Lyme Disease, was in the Canadian Military, ended up getting discharged because of it and ended up getting her pension denied. So she started a cupcake shop to make money to be able to pay for her treatments.”
Johnson said this is something he wants to help bring awareness to, using the platform he has.
After a successful run last year, he’s looking forward to another good showing this year.
“It’s always a pleasure for me to host an event and my teammates come out in full effect, just to see their support means a lot to me,” he said. “Also, the fans. Our fans are tremendous. They come out and show support and that’s what it’s all about.”
The barbeque starts at noon and ends at 4:00 pm.
