Careless smoking has been the cause of ten structure fires to date this year in Regina.
That’s from the Fire Marshal of Regina Fire and Protective Services, Randy Ryba.
“People are not discarding their cigarettes or their smokers material correctly,” he said. “That’s the bottom line.”
Ryba said when improperly disposed of cigarettes or smoking products catch fire, they can cause an incredible amount of damage.
“It’ll go right up the side of the structure into the eaves if we don’t get at quick enough or if takes us time to get there, four or five minutes,” he said. “Takes the roof off the house, it’s not superficial damage.”
Ryba said the ten structure fires caused by careless smoking is actually the high water mark for blazes of this nature caused here annually.
