Saskatchewan Roughriders Head Coach Chris Jones isn’t coming right out and saying Zach Collaros will be the team’s starting quarterback Thursday night in Edmonton, but you can expect he will.
“It doesn’t matter who starts. “Jones told reporters after a closed practice Wednesday.“I know for sure Zach Collaros will play and Brandon Bridge will probably play a little bit, too.” When asked if Collaros will be the starting quarterback, the response was “He’ll play a bunch.”
Collaros has not seen any game action since suffering a concussion in a loss June 21 to the Ottawa REDBLACKS. While the team managed to win twice without him, the offence has struggled with those struggles being evident last week in a loss to the Calgary Stampeders. It is hoped his presence will spark an offence that has only scored six touchdowns all season.
One player who may benefit from Collaros’ return is receiver Naaman Roosevelt. He says Collaros has been involved in all meetings and voicing his input. He says his return will bring some much-needed confidence in the huddle.
“I definitely think so.” Roosevelt proclaimed. “He comes in and is great at communicating. On every play he is saying look for this, look for this and look for this defender to do this. With him communicating and his understanding of defences, it really helps us out.
The 3-3 Riders meet the 4-2 Eskimos in an 8 o’clock start Thursday night from Commonwealth Stadium. Our game-day coverage starts at 5.
