Regina commuters may soon need to slow down even more in school zones.
City administration is currently tabling a report on a 30 kilometre an hour school zone, down from the curent 40 kilometres an hour.
City spokesperson Norman Kyle said the zone enforcement may also change to 7 AM to 7 PM.
“A grade four (student) typically isn’t in school at 10:30 at night, so this is more to align the school zone times with the times that motorists could expect those kids to be going to and from school, and school activities.”
Kyle said the 10 kilometre an hour decrease makes a big difference.
“Studies have shown that the survivability rates of a pedestrian vehicle impact at 30 kilometres an hour you have a 95% survivability rate, at 40 kilometres an hour it drops to 80%, and at 50 kilometres an hour, it drops to 55%.”
Saskatoon’s school zones are 30 kilometres an hour, but are only in place from 8 AM to 5 PM from September to June.
