SGI’s traffic safety spotlight for August is on impaired driving, with a special focus on drug impairment.
The insurance company’s Tyler McMurchy said they run the focus several times a year, and says while the danger of alcohol impairment is known, not so when it comes to drugs.
“We are highlighting the role of drug recognition, evaluation trained police officers. There are many of these throughout the province of Saskatchewan. We want to let people know that driving high is a DUI.”
McMurchy said while police will be looking for alcohol impairment, they’ll be putting more focus on drug impaired drivers this month.
“We want to remind people that it is illegal and will continue to be illegal, to drive while impaired, whether it’s by drugs or alcohol and that is even once marijuana use becomes legal in Canada on October 17th.”
McMurchy adds they focus on impaired driving several times a year, as it’s the number one cause of fatal accidents in the province.
