The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games are now just one year out.
The games are being held in Swift Current, with around 1700 athletes expected to be participating.
Games Manager Denise Barbier said it’s still a year out, but they’re working every day on all the details.
“We’re working on test events this summer, in preparation,” she said. “Then, we have some test events we’ll be doing next spring as well, prior to the games.”
To date, Barbier noted they have held a few test events already.
“The two test events that we’ve held so far were quite successful,” she said. “We had good participation, we had good volunteer support. We were challenged a little bit by some weather conditions, but that’s exactly why we do test events.”
This will be the fifth time the WCSG has been held in Saskatchewan, having previously been hosted in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and in Regina twice before. But it’s the first time it’s come to Swift Current and southernwestern Saskatchewan.
“It’s the largest event that Swift Current and our whole southwest region has ever hosted, so I think it’s going to draw some attention to our area.”
And with that large number of people descending upon the city, Barbier knows they’re going to need some help.
“We haven’t started our games time volunteer recruitment drive quite yet, because people don’t know their schedules this far in advance, but we anticipate needing 2000 volunteers come game time next August.”
