Update – On Wednesday afternoon, a Regina Police Service member ended up shooting a dog during a canine unit training session.
Just before 12:30 pm, police units were training with their canine in an open field in the 5200 block of 14th avenue, which is the Rambler baseball diamonds next to the Cathy Lauritsen Memorial off-leash park.
A man approached the training area in a vehicle with his two dogs that were off-leash.
That’s when the officer approached the man with the two dogs, without his canine officer, and asked they he relocate them or leash his large breed dogs while he was training with his own.
The officer claims one of the dogs was suddenly aggressive towards him and posed an immediate threat, so the officer drew their pistol and shot the dog.
A full investigation is now being conducted, which is consistent with the Use of Force Policy, which will be submitted to the Use of Force Board.
Police are in touch with the dog owner.
The dog is reportedly being treated at a vet clinic and is expected to recover.
Somebody from the Regina Police Service is expected to speak on the matter on Thursday.
