Regina Police are responding to the public outrage after an officer shot a dog in Rambler Park.
Canine units were starting training at the park when two dogs were let out of a vehicle and were off their leashes.
Acting deputy chief Corey Zaharuk said the shooting is under investigation.
“In this case, the investigation was launched immediately, (and) once it’s completed it will be submitted to our use of force review board, who will assess the officer’s conduct, and make potential recommendations, if any, as a result of the incident and the actions taken by the officer.”
The investigation has a wide range of outcomes, as it could be found that appropriate use of force was taken and no discipline will be enforced, all the way to a criminal charge being laid.
Zaharuk said the officer in question has numerous years of experience with the canine unit.
“As the officer got closer to the man, it appears they exchanged a greeting, and the officer asked the man to leash his dogs, as the area was not part of the near-by designated off-leash dog park.”
The dog is still recovering from the shot and numerous surgeries as a result of the incident.
