Last week I was at Safeway to pick up a few things from the bakery. Normally, the only time I go there is to pick up some fresh buns for burgers or hot dogs. Of course, while I’m there, I usually end up filling my basket with other stuff that I had no intention of buying.
While I was standing in line I noticed a Halloween display featuring those big boxes of mini chocolate bars. I was suddenly running numbers through my mind wondering whether or not I’d lost a month somewhere. It seemed odd to me that a store would be featuring Halloween candy 2 1/2 months before the actual event! The kids aren’t even back in school yet and plans are already in motion to get them all sugared up before sending them off into November.
If that’s how far ahead stores are planning now, does that mean we should be seeing Christmas displays and hearing Christmas songs in the stores by the first week in October? God, I hope not.
I understand we’re a month away from the first day of fall, but let’s not rush things along here. We still have baseball and football to get through yet!
After that, then we can start worrying about Christmas.
