Shaunavon’s Hayley Wickenheiser has made her way to the NHL.
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday the 40-year-old from Shaunavon has been hired as assistant director of player development.
A member of the Order of Canada, Wickenheiser retired from playing in 2017. In 23 years, she was a seven-time world champion and five-time Olympic medalist.
She was flag-bearer at the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She ended with the most goals, assists and points for the national team and as the all-time leading scorer in the Olympic women’s hockey.
