An attempt by Regina-Lewvan MP Erin Weir to get back to the federal NDP caucus has been rejected by leader Jagmeet Singh. Singh has not only said no to the request, but he is also saying he will not approve his candidacy to run for the party again in the next federal election.
That decision has drawn the anger of many former Saskatchewan NDP MP’s and MLA’s who have written a letter to Singh voicing their displeasure and their support of Weir who was banished following complaints of harassment and sexual harassment.
Pat Atkinson is heading up that group. She says what Singh is doing is simply wrong and that Weir should be reinstated.
“We think that the constitution has been violated, that party policy has been violated, the House of Commons policy, the collective agreement.” Atkinson said from her home in Saskatoon. “You cannot have an investigation without an actual complaint, and Mr. Singh ignored all that.
Amongst those signing the letter are long-time Saskatchewan NDP politicians like Lorne Nystrom, John Solomon, Glenn Hagel and Deb Higgins.
That letter states many things including a fair and objective examination of the details involved simply does not support either the leader’s characterization of the conduct complained of or the extreme harshness of the public shaming and banishment deemed by the leader to be fair and appropriate responses.
Atkinson goes on to say if Weir is not reinstated as the letter indicates that it could have some severe repercussions for the party when the next federal election comes around.
She adds this decision is “devastating” for Weir who has been a supporter of the NDP since he was 13.
