The City of Regina is once again dealing with Water main breaks.
The city is mainly experiencing the water main breaks within the Ring Road area due to older infrastructure within that area.
Director of Water Works Pat Wilson said there are 55 current leaks running, compared to 85 this time last year.
“Last year, by this point in time we had fixed 54 main breaks, and this year we’re at about 27, so we’re running at about half the number that we were last year,” Wilson said. “As I said, it’s still a high number, we have actually had more main breaks this year than we had lat year.”
However, Wilson said a lot of this year’s water main breaks took place over the winter.
Wilson said crews are out in full force, working weekends as well.
“We are trying to get as many crews as possible to two breaks in a day, and we are running all of our crews so we’re pulling in staff from other areas in order to fill out crews so that we don’t exhaust our staff, that’s something that we do have to watch for very carefully,” Wilson said. “Safety is paramount importance, and we need well-rested people working.”
September is historically the worst month when it comes to water main breaks in Regina.
