Former Progressive Conservative Maxime Bernier announced the formation of “The People’s Party of Canada” on Friday
“Nobody speaks for the people,” Bernier said. “The People’s Party of Canada will fight for the same fundamental values that I have put forward during my leadership campaign last year: individual freedom, personal responsibility, fairness and respect.”
Bernier said the People’s Party will denounce taxes, programs and regulations.
Peppered with questions about a range of issues, Bernier, who says he is keeping his seat in the House of Commons, talked about his vision for the People’s Party, which he said will be to “put the power back into the people’s hands.”
He said he has not and does not intend on contacting current Conservative MPs to join him, but it is his intention to have a candidate in every riding when the next federal election is held.
Bernier has not registered his party with Elections Canada yet, but said that his party will respect fundraising regulations by not accepting more than $1,575 from individual donors. He said registering with Elections Canada will take “many more weeks.”
