An announcement by Crescent Point Energy earlier in September that they are reducing their workforce by 17 percent means layoffs in Saskatchewan, but the impact of those layoffs is not quite clear.
While the company which has a large presence in Saskatchewan’s oil and gas industry, will continue to have a presence in some of its holdings, they are getting rid of others.
Provincial Energy Minister Bronwyn Eyre, is hoping that leads to opportunity.
“I think in this case, we hope that this creates some opportunity for junior mining companies, who could operate wells and facilities in some of the areas where Crescent Point might be un-focusing a little bit,” Eyre said.
Eyre also said there is no indication of Crescent Point pulling up stakes and leaving Saskatchewan.
Crescent Point says its workforce reduction was completed earlier this month, but the company refuses to say how many people were affected in Saskatchewan
