It’s the start of a new month, and for SGI it’s the start of a new traffic safety focus.
The insurance company’s Tyler McMurchy said the focus this October is distracted driving.
“Our message this month is distracted driving is not a good look on anyone, whether or not you’re eating a messy burger behind the wheel, or dealing with a large, unruly dog on your lap, it’s not a good look,” McMurchy said. “We want everybody’s attention on the road.”
McMurchy said they want to remind people not to do things like eat, put on make-up or even pet a dog while behind the wheel.
“A good reminder to people that it is illegal to hold, use, manipulate or view an hand-held electronic device while you are operating a motor vehicle,” McMurchy said. “There’s a $280 fine, and four demerit points off your licence.”
Last year in Saskatchewan, there were 6,000 distracted driving collisions resulting in 953 injuries and 26 deaths.
