University of Regina linebacker Cole Benkic has been named the Canada West Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Rams to a 32-31 overtime victory over Manitoba on Saturday in Winnipeg.
Benkic had four solo tackles, four assisted tackles, and two forced fumbles during the win but most importantly made a critical play on the last snap of the game. After the Bisons scored a touchdown on their possession in overtime, Manitoba opted to go for two, but they failed when Benkic swatted away the pass at the line of scrimmage to preserve the win.
Both of Benkic’s forced fumbles resulted in turnovers. His strip sack on Manitoba quarterback DesCatellier late in the second quarter snuffed out a Manitoba drive that had the Bisons inside the Rams’ 10-yard line, and just three possessions later he tore the ball loose from Bisons running back Jamel Lyles which led directly to a Rams touchdown.
The Rams, 3-2 on the season, are on a bye week. They won’t play again until Friday, October 12 when they meet the University of Alberta at Mosaic Stadium in a 7 o’clock start.
