After Friday night, the Saskatchewan NDP will have their first candidate nominee for the provincial election in 2020.
The party’s annual convention goes this weekend at TCU Place in Saskatoon.
John Tzupa, the NDP’s Provincial Secretary and CEO said the weekend will also be seen as the start of the campaign.
“Definitely it’s the beginning of campaigning,” Tzupa said. “Now nominations are open so we had not had them open prior to now, so nominations are open and we’ve had tons of interest from all over the province, people submitting their names for candidacy. That will lead to nominating candidates, who will be off on the campaign trail as soon as they’re nominated,” Tzupa said.
The weekend will be full of speeches on policies and ideas from out of province NDP members including the Alberta Government.
“We have hundreds of New Democrats coming together from across the province,” Tzupa added. ” Starting today (Friday) we’re going to have some great speakers that we’re going to hear from, including Shannon Phillips from the Alberta NDP Government, we’re also going to have some policy debate that people have brought forward,” Tzupa said.
The convention opens at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, with everything wrapping up at noon on Sunday.
