A small Saskatchewan town is in the national spotlight once again.
Smith Field at Shaunavon High School is one of the four finalists for a $250,000 grand prize from Project Play for a recreational upgrade., with the three runner-ups will receive $25,000.
According to Rachelle Dordu, an Educational Assistant at the school, the upgrades are much needed.
“We don’t have much for seating for them, so we desperately need some bleachers, that’s our starting point,” she said. “And then, the change room at the moment is a garden shed that the boys are changing in and it’s not it’s not insulated or heated.”
At this time, the current seating capacity is about 30. Should they win, Dordu said they’d like to increase it to accommodate 400 to 500 people.
Several athletic clubs around town access the field, including the football, track and soccer teams from.
This is highly important to Dordu and many in the town. With around 1700 residents in Shaunavon, school sports is something the entire community rallies around.
“Sports is our entertainment,” she said, with a laugh. “Everybody goes to all the sporting events for something to do. And when our boys and girls are playing, we have fantastic support from our community.”
This isn’t the first time this year a Saskatchewan community has been in the running for some big money. Earlier this year, Lafleche was a runner-up in the Kraft Hockeyville sweepstakes and received $25,000.
