I know a lot of people are appalled at the thought of pot becoming legal, believing society is going to hell in a hand basket. Hey, people have been doing it for decades and decades and decades. It’s not like it’s a brand new thing that has suddenly been thrust upon us without warning. Believe me, the crime rate will not suddenly sky rocket because people are out there robbing others just to buy a bag of pot.
I have many friends who smoke pot and have smoked it for a long time. Personally, it’s just not my cup of tea. My friends and I used to smoke it in when we were in high school, but I never really enjoyed it. I found I got a little too paranoid for my own good. I haven’t tried it in nearly 40 years, but I certainly don’t begrudge those that enjoy it.
I think the government did the smart thing in legalizing it. You’re never going to get rid of it.
I think the same thing should be done with prostitution. It’s the oldest profession in the world. The second oldest profession? Trying to figure out how to eradicate it. It can’t be done. There are countries where prostitution is legal. Those governments have figured out a solution. Legalize it, tax it, and regulate it. Put it in areas where only those looking for those services will go so it won’t be visible to families, children, or anyone else offended by it. Out of sight, out of mind.
I don’t smoke pot and I don’t use the services offered up in the sex industry, but there are people that do and there will always be people that do. I don’t think people that indulge in either should be labelled as criminals.
Society dictates morals. Recent history has taught us that there are things that were deemed acceptable way back when that are not acceptable today and there were things deemed as unacceptable back then that are acceptable nowadays. It’s a constant shift.
It’s time to move on.
Let’s keep an eye on the real criminals that pose a problem in today’s world.
