It is a big weekend at the University of Regina as the Cougar basketball teams start up the home portion of their season with games against Trinity Western.
The girls team, ranked #6 in the country, will start things off against Trinity Western starting at 6 PM. After the game, the team will hoist the Canada West championship banner that they won on their home floor last season.
That game will be followed by the men’s game against Trinity Western,
It is a big weekend for the men’s team as they celebrate their 50th anniversary with events planned during the weekend including a ceremony at half-time Saturday night.
Craig Perreault is one of the organizers of the weekend event and says it has been a fantastic experience getting everything together.
Perreault says one of the things that surprised him is the small fraternity of Cougar basketball players.
“There are only 280 in the database of players who have played. “Perrault says. “Whether you were a Cougar for five years or one, you are a Cougar forever.
One of the many who will be back this weekend is Ken Murray. He took over a Cougar program in 1982 that had lost 62 games in a row and got them to an appearance in the Nationals a few years later in 1989. The star of that team was Chris Biegler. He was instrumental in getting many players back for the reunion and will be front and centre when alumni in attendance are introduced at half-time of Saturday’s game.
