Humboldt has lost one of its most famous citizens.
The Humboldt Broncos hockey team announced Saturday night that Elgar Petersen, the man whose name is on the rink in the city and was the face of hockey in the community, passed away Saturday night at the age of 82.
Petersen was a volunteer unlike any other as he was a mainstay around the Broncos and the rink helping out in whatever capacity he could since the Broncos were born in 1980. Whether it was tying up the skates of those in minor hockey or filling water bottles, Petersen was there and his work quickly become appreciated in the community. That appreciation was shown in 1980 when Humboldt named their hockey arena, the Elgar Petersen Arena.
Funeral services have not been announced.
