So the people of Calgary have spoken and they’re saying no to hosting the Olympics in the city again. To be honest it’s a shame because I think it’d be cool for not only Canada to host the Olympics again but in this particular case have them within driving distance to maybe go to some of the events. That said I totally understand why people voted no in their plebiscite. It’s a massive undertaking and quickly balloons way past the initial bid money. You might say it’ll only cost five billion but an extra twenty five billion later and your into deep. It’s a lot of debt and construction work and if you do a little digging it turns out people really don’t want the added load of whatever it takes to run something like the Olympics.
Cities lately have all been doing referendums and allowing people to voice their concerns and so far it seems that no one wants to host the Olympics anymore. I did think of a solution. Pick a bunch of cities/countries that actually really want to host the Olympics and then just cycle through them. Pick like four different cities for both the summer and winter games and then just go to each one and then cycle back through. So if London wants to host the Summer games great add them to the list with everyone else and every couple of years they can. At the rate the IOC is going though just finding somebody to host the games just once is starting to become a problem.
