There has been no confirmation from either the Western Hockey League or the Kootenay Ice, but there are signs suggesting the team based in Cranbrook, B.C. could be heading to Winnipeg in time for the 2019-20 season.
A community group in Cranbrook trying to boost ticket sales to keep the team there stopped their initiative this week saying they had lost faith in the Ice’s ownership group.
Majority owner Greg Fettes and minority partner Matt Cockell purchased the team in 2017 with some in Cranbrook now wondering if this was their plan when purchasing the club.
The Winnipeg Free Press reports if the move were to happen, the team would play at the Wayne Fleming Arena which is the home of the University of Manitoba Bisons for two years while a new 5000 seat rink gets built.
The Western Hockey League has not made any statements on the matter.
For a team to move, 15 of the 22 teams in the league or two-thirds must approve it.
The last WHL team based in Winnipeg were the Warriors. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1984.
