The “burning of the brand” ceremony officially opened Canadian Western Agribition Monday in Regina.
Former federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz held the branding iron to burn the Agribition logo into a block of wood to open the show.
Ritz says he was honored to open the week-long show, which he says has grown dramatically in recent years.
He told reporters the proposed federal carbon tax is one of the key issues facing farmers.
Another key issue is grain movement, which he hopes will improve once oil is shipped through pipelines instead of on the rail.
Ritz also says trade deals are extremely important for the farming community, and pointed to the recently approved TPP and Canada-U.S.-Mexico agreements.
