Former Saskatchewan Roughrider Justin Cox was in a Regina courtroom on Tuesday where he apologized to a former girlfriend for an assault in August 2017.
The Crown read a victim impact statement from the 23-year-old woman. That statement said Cox started assaulting her in a vehicle at the Normanview Mall and continued that assault all the way to the site of the old Taylor Field.
The woman managed to escape and flag down a vehicle. Cox then tried to jump in the open window of that car in an attempt to get the woman out of the vehicle. He also jumped on the hood of the car.
“I’m sorry for everything that happened,” Cox said. “I hope I get another chance.”
Cox is to be sentenced in early December with a date to be set next week.
The Crown is looking for 12 months jail time followed by 18 months of probation with conditions while the defence is asking for a sentence that is somewhat lighter.
Cox was the Riders rookie of the year in 2016. He has other charges that need to be dealt with stemming from different incidents including one from this summer where a woman was assaulted at a home in east Regina.
