The future of Saskatchewan libraries was brought up during Question Period on Wednesday.
NDP education critic Carla Beck is concerned about a review process currently being held and what it will result in.
Beck says one of the questions being asked in that review is one that is very concerning.
“If headquarters ceased to exist, what impact would it have on your library and services it provides to patrons, could your local library branch survive?” Beck said. “Will the minister table the answers to those questions and ensure cuts to library headquarters are absolutely off the table.”
Education minister Gord Wyant says the review being done by the government will be tabled to the House with recommendations when it is done and that many voices need to be heard. Wyant says results of the work being done on the future of libraries is not pre-determined and that he will wait for those recommendations to be made before acting further on the matter. He says the government knows about the importance of libraries both present and in the future.
