Gull Lake, a town 300 kilometers west of Regina on Highway 1, is preparing for a big weekend in January.
The town and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association released some details Wednesday on the 2019 Hockey Day in Saskatchewan as they will serve as the host town for the event.
Co-Chair Sara Kuntz says it is a weekend the town can not wait for as they welcome many in Saskatchewan hockey to Gull Lake for what just won’t be a day of celebrating the game, but a weekend of doing so.
This year’s Hockey Day in Saskatchewan is January 19, but Kuntz says the weekend will start off with a celebrity dinner hosted by former NHL great Dennis Hull.
Games will follow Saturday and Sunday with three big games going Saturday. They will see the Saskatchewan Female Midget “AAA” Hockey League’s Swift Current Wildcats taking on the Battlefords Sharks. Followed by a Saskatchewan Midget “AAA” Hockey League contest between the Swift Current Legionnaires and the Tisdale Trojans. The final game will feature the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Notre Dame Hounds battling it out against the Battlefords North Stars.
Kuntz says the rink in small-town Saskatchewan is the meeting point for many in the winter time and Gull Lake is no exception. She and the town can’t wait to showcase the game and welcome many from across the province for the weekend event.
She adds with the national “Hockey Day in Canada’ being in Swift Current this year that hockey in the southwest will definitely be showcased this winter.
