If you only use the term Fruit Cake are you more likely to try/enjoy Christmas Cake.
The Light or Dark question is polarizing, who can forget the option; Neither! Those that voted NEITHER are very adamant about that choice. But why .. is it the texture, the fact that it is chocked full of fruit, nut and booze. What is it? Perhaps as a kid you were forced to eat it! Is it a confection you come to love as you get older!
Classic wedding cake was generally fruit cake with a thick layer of marzipan or fondant. Remember, it was wrapped in a doily and plastic wrap with a “Thank You” note from the bride and groom attached. You were to put it under your pillow for good luck .. was that to keep your own marriage together or was it in the hope you too would be married in short order!
Wedding cake presented in this fashion, does it happen anymore? Everything old is new again, right?
I’ll take the dark fruit cake, in fact I have some in my deep freeze now. Best served cold as it keeps the cake together. The local Shrine sells them as a fundraiser. You don’t need much and it basically becomes a mean on its own with candied fruit, cherries, walnuts and other ingredients. Our mom used to make both light and dark. The art of the fruit cake is not for the novice baker, but you have to start somewhere!
Buck the trend of those haters and give it a try this festive season! You might just enjoy your experience. (PS in a straw poll – DARK won! closely followed by neither!)
