All transit services will be free this New Year’s Eve.
The city of Regina and SGI are once again offering the free services to ensure everyone get home safe this year, but this year under a new name. Minister responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave says campaign name has changed from Ding in the New Year to Wing in the New Year. “It’s about you being a good person and advising people, no take a ride home. It’s about me advising people. It’s about everybody being that good wingman and everybody looking out for other people and to say plan a safe ride home, take a safe ride home. Encouraging people to do it instead of standing by and saying nothing, say something.”
The two organizations say there is no excuse to get behind the wheel after drinking when there are multiple options like this.
Regina Police say this is first New Year’s Eve when marijuana is legal. Superintendent Darcy Koch says if you plan on smoking or consuming any of the drug, do not get behind the wheel. Koch adds that RPS currently doesn’t have a roadside testing device, officers will be checking for all kinds of impairment. “We are looking into [getting a roadside testing device], but we do have drug recognition experts that are trained to stop a driver and do tests to determine if they are impaired by drug or alcohol so we are very confident we have that ability right now,” added Koch.
Mayor Michael Fougere says that Wing in the New Year would not be possible without the support and hours put in by volunteers. “these workers want to do this, these drivers want to be there, they made the choice themselves to volunteer to do this.” He adds that, “for us as a city we are very proud of that fact that the drivers and support staff will be there throughout the evening making sure the people get home safely.”
The city says Wing in the New Year helped 2.300 people get home safely last year.
This year the service will run from 7:00pm to 2:15am. You can visit TransitLive.com to see real-time schedules and bus routes or call the RideLine at 306-777-RIDE (7433) for more information.
