The Ministry of Environment is giving the Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan a grant to help remove the abandoned scrap tires in Assiniboia.
The ministry will be giving TSS up to $3.3-million to help manage the almost 15-million pounds of scrap tires left by Assiniboia Rubber Recycling plant that closed in 2014. Minister of Environment Dustin Duncan said this is an issue that needs to be dealt with because it is becoming a health and safety issue for the community. “This has been a long standing concern for the community of Assiniboia. We certainly know the danger these stock piles of tires can pose a community, particularly one that is in close proximately to the community and infrastructure like their water.”
Duncan added that the grant money will go towards removing and recycling the tires.
“TSS is currently completing a contract with a processor, who once they begin work early in 2019, will be on-site to remove the tires from the site and take them to essentially a processing and recycling site that will see the tire and the rubber be recycled and used into other product,” said Duncan.
He said the cleanup of the site is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
