A teacher at Miller Comprehensive Catholic High School in Regina is receiving an award from the Prime Minister.
Science, Health Science and Biology Teacher at Miller Comprehensive Catholic High School Heather Faris was given the two year old award for being a leader in the field.
Faris said she is honoured to receive an award for something she does every day and just loves doing.
“It’s really hard to put into words because all I can ever think about when I think about my teaching are my kids, and just trying to provide an environment for them where they feel confident and positive and safe so that they can explore their learning in ways that are new to them and allow them to succeed.”
Faris said she approaches teaching with an inquiry point of view, rather than just giving out instructions and procedures.
“In my classes with inquiry instead of giving a procedure, I tell my students what their goal is, what the end game is and give them the tools necessary to reach that end game in whatever fashion or form they take.”
She adds that she also tries to make school a little more interesting by teaming up with the U of R and having students work at a garden at the school.
Faris was given the award by Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale on Friday.
