Severe weather wreaks havoc in Meadow Lake Provincial Park

Mother Nature’s fury has been felt in Meadow Lake Provincial Park with a campground being destroyed by what some say was a tornado.

People were evacuated from the park in northwestern Saskatchewan and taken to the town hall in Goodsoil with reports of a campground being completely destroyed with many trailers being flipped over or destroyed by fallen trees.

Three people are said to have suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.

The Saskatchewan government sent out a statement Saturday night.

“We are aware of an extreme weather event that passed through the Meadow Lake area this evening.

The emergency management personnel from the Ministry of Government Relations have been mobilized and are co-ordinating emergency response with the RCMP, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, paramedics and others.

At this time, we can only confirm that there has been substantial damage to the area and we are responding to many requests for assistance. Once we have a better analysis of the situation, we will be able to communicate more details.

We encourage those in the area to be cautious and prioritize safety. We are confident that the responding agencies are providing an extensive response to the situation, and ask members of the public to avoid travelling to impacted areas to allow the authorities to focus on addressing the situation.”

This video was shot by Barry Butler showing the force of the storm when it hit the area late Saturday afternoon.

More information is expected sometime on Sunday.  It is far too early to tell if the area was hit by a tornado or a plough wind.  The area had been under a severe thunderstorm warning on Saturday.
