Traffic restrictions for Canada Day in Regina

Canada Day is filled with lots of activities prompting the Regina Police Service to implement some traffic restrictions in different parts of the city.

RPS say with the Saskatchewan Roughriders home opener against the Toronto Argonauts at 5:00 p.m. from Mosaic Stadium, there will be some road closures around that area.

Beginning at 1:00 p.m. there will be no vehicle traffic allowed on the 1500, 1600 and 1700 blocks of Elphinstone Street.

Access is limited to public transit buses and local residents only. Police say they may ask for proof to show that you are a local resident (for example, an identification card with a home address).

Football fans and drivers will find these street closures on the following roads and intersections:

  • 1500 block of Elphinstone Street at Dewdney Avenue;
  • Princess Street and 9th Avenue;
  • Argyle Street and 9th Avenue;
  • McTavish Street and 9th Avenue;
  • Elphinstone Street and 9th Avenue;
  • Montague Street and 10th Avenue;
  • Elphinstone Street and North Railway Street;
  • Saskatchewan Drive and Elphinstone Street.

An increased amount of officers will be present to manage high volumes of traffic and to enhance safety in the area.

Following the conclusion of the game, there will be more restrictions for pedestrians and motorists to be aware of near Wascana Lake for the fireworks display later tonight.

Starting at 9:00 p.m., Albert Street between College Avenue and Regina Avenue will be closed.

Police are reminding the public to not park illegally or stop vehicles on the road to watch the fireworks. RPS is emphasizing this for drivers taking the Highway 1 bypass between Assiniboine Avenue and Wascana Parkway, along with Broad Street between College Avenue and Lakeshore Drive.

People should prepare themselves for a rise in traffic and pedestrians near Mosaic Stadium and Wascana Park throughout the day today. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Leave early to allow yourself time when arriving to your destination;
  • Park legally and in designated parking spots;
  • Remember to lock your doors or secure your bikes and remove all valuables;
  • Dress for the appropriate weather conditions (sunny during the day, rain at night) and consider bringing a raincoat/warm clothing for the evening hours;
  • There is no smoking in public areas;
  • Keep children close and within eye sight and consider a plan in the case of a lost child;
  • Respect all public areas by using trash cans and only consuming alcohol in designated beer gardens.
